ASTA was established in 1944 to discuss questions relating to the teaching of Science. During the early days it held general meetings once a term. It was heavily involved in curriculum development and the critique of exam papers before NCEA was introduced. Through the critique process, they regularly communicated with the then Auckland University College, the British Science Masters Association and the Australian Science Teachers Association. ASTA was also the initial force behind the Annual Auckland Science Fair.
Currently, ASTA’s role is to further the interests of science education in all its aspects in the Auckland Region. The group supports activities including, but not limited to, subject support groups, science fairs, BP Challenge, Year 10 Science Quiz and Science Conferences. We also continue to be involved in curriculum development and promote careers in science.

Baking Industry Research Trust (BIRT) is a sub-committee of the New Zealand Association of Bakers (NZAB), delegated the responsibility of administering the Trust Account. The Trust Account was set up to meet the requirements of the Wheat Industry Research Levies Act 1989 and to identify and make recommendations to the NZAB Executive. The NZAB Executive has legal responsibility for administering the Trust, and other levy payers on research projects.
The BIRT committee is made up of plant bakers, small bakeries represented by the Baking Industry Association of New Zealand (BIANZ) (Baking Society) and biscuit manufacturers, as well as the Chair of the New Zealand Flour Milling Industry Research Trust. The New Zealand Entomological Society is an organization for people who are interested in insects and other invertebrates. Its members include amateur and professional entomologists.
The Society organizes an annual conference and publishes a scientific journal and a bulletin, The Weta, with items more suitable for amateurs.
There is an Auckland Branch of the Society who meet in the evening once a month. In the summer we also meet once a month for a field trip when we look for insects.
The Auckland Branch has produced guidelines for encouraging insects in your garden.
We are also developing signs about insects and other invertebrates for parks and reserves. The first 4 are cabbage tree moth. puriri moth, pohutukawa leaf miner and Coprosma white erineum mite. They show the damage done to the plant and life stages of the insect or mite. The signs are available from Metal Images.
Fact sheets on interesting insects are also available on our links tab.
The New Zealand Entomological Society is proud to provide the
Clare Butcher award for the best project on Natural History!
Project ideas
What factors affect the decay of leaves of native plants.
Does the texture of the underside of 'tiles/blocks' affect the kinds of invertebrates living there.
What kinds of native invertebrate herbivores only live in remnants of native forests and which kinds will colonize their host plants where ever they grow. For suitable target plant species, a useful selection of herbivores can be identified from photographs of their distinctive damage to the plant, e.g. leaf miners.

Established in 1992 at Auckland Museum the GeoClub is now part of the Auckland Branch of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand at Auckland University. The Club is a mix of enthusiastic amateurs and professionals who share a common interest in the study and understanding of Auckland's geology and fossils and has a membership of approximately 100.
No previous knowledge or understanding of geology is required to become a member, although most of our members started by taking an adult education course or a geology paper at University. The main requirement is an enthusiasm to understand something about the long history of the earth and our region.
Recent Club field trips have included visits to Hokianga, East Cape, Rotorua, Port Waikato, Waihi Gold Mine, Puketotara Peninsula, Kawau Island, the Miranda coast, Piha, Browns Island, Pollen Island, Whangaparoa, the Hillsborough coast, Queens Street building stones, Takapuna fossil forest to mention a few.
Geology is a hobby that families and people of all ages can enjoy. It gets you out into the open air and is a great way to exercise. It takes you to fascinating places you have never visited before and above all you will start seeing the landscape with new eyes. No longer will you just see sheep grazing on hills. You will start to see the lava flows, the fault lines, the folded strata that control the shape of the hills, ancient river terraces and coastal plains.
Monthly meetings at the Epsom Community Centre, 200 Gillies Ave with lectures and slide shows. Parking is available (see below ) with easy access from the motorway. Books and pamphlets on New Zealand geology available at wholesale prices. Expert assistance available to help identify your problem rocks, minerals or fossils.
Frequent field trips of half or full day duration in the weekends throughout the year. Car-pooling is encouraged. Periodic long weekend field trips to interesting geology further from Auckland, with costs kept low with budget accommodation.

The Photon Factory is part of the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland. Our vibrant team of approximately 25 staff and students bring expertise from a range of disciplines: engineering, physics, chemistry and biology.
The Photon Factory’s research is advancing the use of light for energy, health and technology.
At a fundamental level, Photon Factory’s scientists are investigating how the energy in light can be converted into different forms, into micromachining power, or used as a tool to explore the composition of complex fluids (such as milk) or to selectively “nudge” cells and particles.
Working together to achieve fundamental discoveries, we then use these advances to benefit New Zealand and the world, with applied research and spin-off companies. We have particular strength - and demonstrated success - in translating our high-tech photonic and microfluidic research to improving outcomes for the dairy sector.

Stardome Observatory and Planetarium is located in the beautiful One Tree Hill Domain, at the base of One Tree Hill, Maungakiekie - one of Auckland's most prominent volcanic cones and natural landmarks.
Stardome is proud to provide the prize for best astronomy/space focused entries for year 7-8 and year 9-10. In the past some very significant prizes have been awarded, who knows what the future may bring?
We would like to suggest these possible areas/topics that you may like to use to produce an interesting Science/Technology project.
Star Stalker: What stars can you see from your house? Do you see the same stars every night? How many constellations can you identify?
Future Exploration: Think about some problems the first people living on Mars might face. What are some practical solutions?
Asteroid Advances: Scientists and entrepreneurs are discussing mining asteroids for minerals. What minerals would they find? How could an asteroid be mined?
Big Full Moon: Does the full moon look really big because it's very bright? Test this idea by carefully observing the lunar eclipse at sunset on 15th April.
Meteor Shower: Are you an early bird? Observe and record the eta-aquarid meteor shower from Comet Halley before dawn during 19 April-28 May.
